In 1877 the club was renamed the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club as it hosted the first Lawn Tennis Championships a gentlemens singles event. Spencer Gore was the first champion and 200 spectators each paid a shilling to watch the final round. Today, Wimbledon attracts an attendance of around 450,000 people and through press, radio and television, is followed by hundreds of millions around the world. The Club has been situated in Church Road since 1922, and The Championships remain the only Grand Slam event still played on grass.
